About Me

My name is Nathanael Xavier, and I am currently enrolled in a two-year consecutive program at York University: Bachelors of Education in Technological Education (BEd in Tech Ed). Upon my completion of this degree in 2020, I hope to work in the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) as a Communications Technology teacher and music teacher.

Why teaching? To backtrack a bit, I have had two passions in my life--music and animation. I started playing the piano at the age of six, and I started to teach piano when I was in high school. This teaching wasn't too serious, and I didn't commit to it, but I learned to enjoy it because I had the opportunity to share my knowledge with somebody else and help them to become a better musician.

Fast forward a few years: after high school, I pursued an undergrad in animation (B.Sc. in Animation) at Manipal University (located in Manipal, India) and I completed that degree in 2014. I came back to Toronto and started to work in the animation industry. I spent 6 months working for a small commercial studio called ZINK (located at King and Spadina). I also spent close to 2 years working for a visual effects studio by the name of Mr. X Inc. (located at King and Bathurst). I found myself eager to teach new hires "the ropes" and explain my work process to some of my coworkers. Though I enjoyed working there, helping to make some awesome movies and TV shows, I started to detest the long hours and my work began to feel like a chore. It was towards the end of my contract in January of 2017, when I realized that this was not something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

It took me several months trying to figure out what to do. Most people told me that I had to choose one passion and focus on it--either music or animation, but it could never be both. However, I realized that both these passions could be merged together in the teaching industry, where I can teach both music and animation at the high school level. After all, I noticed that regardless of my industry (music or animation), there was one common factor: I enjoyed teaching the subjects that I loved the most. I established my own music studio in April 2017 and have been teaching ever since, usually averaging about 15-20 students every week. As fun this is (running my own business), it's not very stable and so I feel that having a job in the school board is not only more financially stable, but a better career overall as it comes with so many benefits. The main thing for me though, is that I'd love to take every opportunity to inspire, motivate, and educate young minds on something that I am passionate about so that one day the students I teach will look back and see how far they've come, and that the sky is the limit when it comes to learning.
